Top 4 E-Readers

E-readers make it easy to read more frequently. E-books are less expensive than regular books, and using a Visa prepaid debit card allows an avid traveler and others on the go to easily purchase e-books, limiting the number of books to carry around. Here are four of the top e-readers, each with its own advantages.

Amazon Kindle

The latest generation of the Amazon Kindle has a more portable design. Amazon has put more work into making the screen easy to read. Readers can quickly turn the pages and access a multitude of newspapers, magazines, e-books and all else online with Wi-Fi access. With the ability to store over 3,000 e-books and a high-powered battery, avid readers will enjoy this lightweight device.

Barnes & Noble Nook Touch Reader

Similar to the Amazon Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook released in 2011 is lightweight with an easy-to-read screen. With built-in Wi-Fi that accesses the Barnes & Noble online store and a powerful battery that can last for nearly two months, readers can’t go wrong with this device. This particular device doesn’t have a Web browser, so it’s strictly for avid readers who enjoy a lightweight device with a strong battery.

Kobo E-Reader Touch Edition

With a screen that isn’t as ideal as the two other varieties, the Kobo e-reader is still a high-quality compact device that is more affordable than the other two e-readers. Use a vision prepaid card to buy this affordable e-reader, and enjoy built-in Wi-Fi and a long-lasting battery.

Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-650

This Sony e-reader is more expensive than the Amazon and Barnes & Noble varieties. However, it’s a user-friendly device that gives you access to a glare-free screen, easy downloads from e-book libraries and audio playback.

Help Your Child Become a Better Speller: Encourage Reading!

You’ve probably utilized multiple techniques to help your child improve their spelling, but have you considered setting aside worksheets and handing them The Phantom Tollbooth instead? A study published by American Educator concluded that “methods that emphasize language structure are more effective than rote methods” (Graham, 1999; Berninger,1999). In other words, kids shouldn’t just write words, they need to read them.

Read Well, Spell Well

Susan Jones, M. Ed stated “The correlation between spelling and reading comprehension is high…The more deeply and thoroughly a student knows a word, the more likely he or she is to recognize it, spell it, define it, and use it appropriately in speech and writing.”

The Joys of Reading

Some children may be reticent to the idea of sitting and finishing a whole book. How can you encourage reading? Here are some ideas:

  • Set aside time to read with your child every day; have them read to you while you make dinner or ride in the car.
  • Arrange a pet reading group. Pets are great neutral listeners that can help a child build confidence when reading aloud.
  • Have a reading goal. If the goal is met, throw a family pizza party.
  • Go to the library and let them pick out a few books of their own. Give them a small reward like stickers for each book they finish.
  • Tap into interests. Animals? Vikings? Fiction, non-fiction, and magazine articles on a favorite subject help spark interest in reading.

Reading is a valuable skill children can utilize their entire life, and one that goes hand in hand with better spelling. Spelling bee dreams? Pick up a book!

History Needs a Context

Far too often in life, now that everybody is so used to bright flashing screens and special effects that look as real as (if not more real than) the world we live in, it’s hard to imagine that people could get excited about the contents of a book. Fortunately for us, there is a lot of history that grants a significant context to the books we read about things in the past. While most people’s reading about the South goes no deeper than flipping through a magazine looking for apartments for rent in Atlanta, there is a whole lot more to the history of that city (as well as many other cities) than most dry textbooks would have us understand.

For one thing, the area of Atlanta began at Fort Peachtree, erected next to an ancient tree that demarcated the border between Creek Native Americans to the south, and Cherokees to the north. In 1814, it was a very wild place where there were no doubt occasionally incursions from one side or the other. In the days when “Indian fighting” was a badge of honor for a European American, that could have been a dangerous, exciting place to put some excitement into your military career. But from that first fort, things got even more interesting.

For a time, they tinkered a lot with where precisely the railroad lines were going to go through, then bragged about how relocating (for the fourth time) would save $18,000 per mile of track. Yep, politicians in those days wasted time and taxpayer dollars just as well as they do today. But only 24 years after Fort Peachtree was first built came the forced march known as the Trail of Tears, when 15,000 Cherokees were marched (killing 4,000 of them) to Arkansas. If you ever go to Atlanta, don’t ever complain if your feet hurt walking around town.

Topics to Discuss in a Book Club

Having a book club is a great way to meet new people and read a host of new books. However, to really drive discussions along after you have read them you need to think of the types of topics you will discuss. Having a preconceived list of questions and areas you want to cover will help prevent your discussions from becoming stifled.

There are different types of topics you should discuss for fiction and non-fiction titles. Fiction books are a good place to start as you can discuss with your group important things like the characters. You can ask the club whether they identified with the main character or, if not, was there something about their personality they didn’t like. Fiction books also often have a number of plot twists and unexpected events, and you can ask the group whether they thought these devices worked within the context of the novel of whether they seemed forced.

Reading non-fiction titles is less common in book clubs, but can provide a wealth of opportunities for discussion none the less. Reading a biography of a famous person is perhaps a good place to start. You could ask the group to make a list of ideas and impressions they had of the person before they started reading their biography and then see how these impressions change as you progress through the book. Other non-fiction books on debatable topics such as religion or climate change can also provide some fascinating discussion, although it must be made clear that you are dealing with people’s personal opinions and any attempts to offend will not be tolerated. You can discuss with the group whether they thought the author provided all the facts in a well balanced manner or whether they thought the argument was valid. It is also important to think about how the book has increased your knowledge on the particular subject.

Welcome to the Age of the Digital Reader

Printing companies spend millions each year to print books and textbooks. Someday, maybe these companies will focus on printing digital media. It seems as if books these days are going the way of CD’s. With the invention of the digital reader, there is less and less of a need for physical copies of books. The world is opening the same way the MP3 player did for digital music. The world will never be the same either.

The Kindle from Amazon was the first to open people’s eyes to the power of the e-reader. It works just like an MP3 player, but holds books. Books can be downloaded onto your reader and read on an LCD screen. The screen is adjusted so not to give your eyes the same strain that a computer screen does.

The next thing it has done is that it’s now available to give you digital copies of all your periodicals. So, instead of running to get the morning paper, or having to look for a digital copy online, you can simply use your digital reader to download the copy and read it wherever you want. It’s a great feature and it’s giving the newspaper business another avenue to stay in business.

However, not everything about the digital reader is good news. The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of books that are still not available online, and many of the older books that you can get for free are not of the highest quality. This, of course, is something the publishing industry will catch up with in time, but until then, it will take some time to get some of the older books. Still, there is no denying that the world is moving quickly into the digital reader age, and it’s just a matter of time before books are only available online.

Reading is very important, but too many people don’t see the value in reading and how much it will affect what they do in life. They see literacy as something that won’t really be needed – with the exception of certain jobs where it’s required. No matter what career path you’re on, though, reading is more than just a means to an end. It can provide you with joy, excitement, and all kinds of hobbies that you hadn’t thought about before. Even if reading isn’t a hobby – most hobbies require a reasonable ability to read so you can learn about them.

If you don’t read that well and you’re uncomfortable about it, there are ways you can get some help without needing to feel embarrassed. Online college degrees are an option, because you don’t have to leave your home and sit in a classroom where your weakness in literacy will be revealed to your classmates. Instead, you can learn to improve your reading online, through remedial courses. Once you’ve gotten your reading up to a good level, you can then go ahead with your other coursework and get your degree. There are many options for online degrees today, and there are a lot of schools that offer them.

Make sure you choose a school that’s willing to work with you, so you don’t have to worry about having a problem after you’ve paid your money and signed up. Both your work and your hobbies will be easier and more fulfilling because you’re able to read well and enjoy so much more.

Why Join a Book Club?

If you are looking for a new hobby or pastime, one great idea is to join a book club. These clubs offer a host of benefits that will spice up your life.

Obviously the best reason to join a book club is you will get to do a lot more reading. However, you will also come across a number of books that you may perhaps not normally read. Joining a book club is a great way to learn about subjects you had never heard of before and discussing the books with your other book club members can be just as interesting.

Joining a book club will also give you access to a range of different opinions and perspectives that you might not otherwise get to see. If you are reading a book on your own, you pretty much have only one way to look at it. However, if there is a number of you reading the same book the others may pick up on themes and subjects that you perhaps had missed.

One of the best parts of a book club is often the food! Most clubs usually meet in an evening in different people’s houses. This gives them the opportunity to put on food for their guests, or people can each bring an item of food to share with the other members. Either way, you may get to try a whole new array of food and wine by joining a book club.

Book clubs are also great because they provide you with motivation to read. Often people would like to read more but come up with excuses like “If I had more time”. When you are part of a book club, the rest of the group is relying on you to read a certain amount by a set period of the week, ensuring that you will follow through on your responsibilities.

If you are setting up a book club, there are many things you need to think about. Not only do you have to sort out what type of books you will read, but you also need to think about where the club will be hosted. However, by far the most important aspect of having a book club is the people you ask to join it!

Book clubs can be enticing for a number of people. If you work in an office, you may have coworkers who might be interested in joining your book club. You could send an email around your office to gain levels of interest or put up a notice in a communal area like the kitchen. If there are enough people interested at work you could even arrange to have the book club in your lunch hour.

Putting a notice in your local library is also a great way to meet new people whoa are interested in books. You will have to decide whether you want to have similar people in your club or a wide range of characters. Having a diverse set of people means the discussions are bound to be more interesting with more varied points of view, although there is a chance that you may not find that many things you have in common. The only real way to know for sure is to try it out.

You should also think about whether you want to have mixed gender books clubs or people of the same sex. Again, same sex book clubs are probably more likely to find common areas of interest, although discussions are bound to be more entertaining with viewpoints from both men and women. Having a mixed group will also ensure that you read books from a wide range of genres, instead of sticking to romance of thriller novels!
