Online is the Best Place to Read

Reading books is a great way to pick up valuable information in life. Think about the process a person had to go through, in order to know enough to write every book you have ever read. Generally, a book you can blaze through in a few hours or a couple of days, took months or researching and years of personal experience to compose. The act of reading something is always going to be faster than the act of writing is, if for no other reason than that writing is so much more difficult. Putting something on a formerly blank page is among life’s great challenges, up there with falling in love or raising a child.

The world takes an even deeper turn into complicated country when you consider how large the world wide web is. There are literally more than 100 million web sites, with something like a trillion total web pages out there. The Internet is a vast jungle of different intersecting pieces. You can do just about anything, from finding a mate, getting an online degree or finding a rare vintage piece of jewelry to finding videos on how to parallel park and reading about the recent adventures of your favorite celebrities.

While there is never going to be a bona fide replacement for a simple, old-fashioned book, the Internet is about as close as we can possibly get. Especially now that we have ways to go online that do not involve a cumbersome computer, you can pretty much read anything at any time you want to. There are no more excuses not to be well read, once you know how to read and can use a smart phone or a netbook. Since those are some reasonably easy skills to master, you can pretty much find any kind of information (or fun reading) you could ever want. We are seriously living the dream.

Use Subscription.com to Save Money on Reference Software

Image by Austin Kleon via Flickr

Reference software can be expensive. It can cost anywhere from $40 to $100; high-end software like encyclopedias can cost even more. If you need 20 different kinds of software for your reference library, you see how the cost quickly adds up. Some reference software provides regular updates and so, requires ongoing fees.

There are a variety of ways to save money when it’s time to invest in reference software. Subscription.com is a great resource that will help you use reference software without having to pay too much for it. Most people do not use each piece of software constantly throughout the day. So, a time-based subscription system makes a lot of sense. At subscription-based websites, you can compare the prices of software, choose what you need, and subscribe to use the software for a few dollars. Your cost will be way less than what you would have paid if you had actually purchased the reference software.

The way this works is that the company that offers the subscription arranges with the software vendor to buy multiple user licenses at a retail price. It then offers this cost savings to a large number of users, playing a volume game where low margins and high volumes create a workable solution for both the supplier and the subscribers. It is also good for the software vendors because they are able to access thousands of users using the go-between supplier. It is a win-win situation for all concerned, and therefore, the business of software subscription is in a good growth phase right now.

There are some free reference sources available, but everyone knows that free stuff never adds up to what you need. So, keep your referencing costs low by using subscriptions.

Read Right! Avoiding Bad Reading Habits

How to Improve Reading Comprehension
Image by Chris Pirillo via Flickr

In everything in life, there is a right way and there is a wrong way to do things. Reading is no different. As a reader, bad habits can emerge during school. With the pressure of so many assignments, some become skimmers. Skimmers start reading the top of a page and then merely glaze through an article to pick up keywords. Some teachers have actually advocated this technique. Students have also been found to skip to the end of a book in order gloss the conclusion. However, these techniques seriously hinder a student’s development of reading comprehension and severely limit them as an adult.

Another serious problem amongst students has been a deficiency in remembering what was read. Due to the sheer amount of knowledge necessary for success in the new millennium, curriculums have expanded in all subject areas. Because of the surmounting pressure, students have been reading and storing more and more information as “short-term” knowledge. “Cramming,” while traditionally for tests here and there, has become a powerful tool for today’s students. However, the knowledge quickly disappears and in the long run, hinders students who may need the skills later.

What’s the best way to avoid these bad habits? Always be conscious of these problems while you or your child is reading. If it’s you, of course, do not skip to the end of the book or article. If it is your child, watch his or her habits as he or she reads a book, even if it’s for leisure. Often times, these bad reading habits will carry over. Then, talk to your child and understand why he or she does it. Review the environment in which your child studies. Make sure that it is relaxed, quiet and conducive to concentration. Finally, replace the bad habit with technique. If you or your child is a skimmer, replace skimming with reading aloud. This way each word gets undivided attention! Take diligent notes to help information stay out of “short-term” memory. Avoid habits by being proactive and taking steps so that you and your family will be good readers!

Trace Auto Insurance Rates With an Online Reference

A reference is no longer just a book containing information. Books and reading are good sources of information but not the only ones. You can still find the information you need online but not have to search through tons of books or spend hours reading. Today’s online references contain more information, stay abreast of changes for the information, and offer a multi-dimensional view of a topic. If you know where to look, you can find facts for any topic from atoms to zebras and from cultures to outer space.

The exact setup for a reference will vary depending on the goal of the company hosting the website. Some companies will host a website designed for children. The content will be at an easier reading level, the graphics may feature cartoon characters, and the games may be educational. A website catering to an adult audience may integrate flash graphics, modern music, and forums to attract users. The reference you choose may be the one you find the easiest to use.

You can use a reference to find many things, including information on auto insurance. An online reference can allow you to gather information on insurance providers. Some may offer user reviews for companies, which can help you determine which company to use. While insurance rates can always change, you may want to base your decision on past data. Many businesses and strategists use this technique to help forecast the probability of something occurring in the future. If you want to find the auto insurance company most likely to offer the lowest rates in the future, you can use a reference to find out past trends for insurance providers.

With an online reference, you can find the information you need when you need it. You can do your research from the comfort of your own home without having to make a trip to the library. Once you have the information you need, you can use the Internet to move on to the next step. This can cut down the time it takes for you to cross an item off your do-to list.

Being Green without Spending Green

Being good to the environment doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank. Despite the tricksters slapping “green” on their products, take a look at some tricks of your own and simple acts that keep you acting green without letting go of your own!

You can always read more about going green at your local library. Here are some reasons and ways to go green:

Don’t Just Buy, Ask Why
Just because the packaging has a sticker that says its “green,” take a moment to understand why. For instance, paper towels may label that they are “green” but does that mean they are made of recycled material or does it mean the size is smaller? When it comes to these consumer goods, look at the labels closely. Understand the recycling codes affixed on the labels.

Recycle EVERYTHING!
Just because it doesn’t go in a bin doesn’t mean that it isn’t recyclable, at least in the conventional sense. The best way to recycle is reusing. That means products like books have ample opportunities to be recycled. Be “green” by buying your books used and selling your books to people who may be interested in them. The added bonus is added green to your wallet! Plenty of resources are available out there; however, if you are so inclined, start a book depository in your neighborhood. Hidden treasures are ample when the community gets involved. Then, start to think bigger! How about recycling your cars or furniture? By reusing and giving products back to the community shows how recycling makes a difference at home as well.

Shop Smart
Packing and shipping have great impacts on the ecosystem. Hundreds of thousands of water bottles are thrown away everyday. In addition to recycling, take the extra step by using reusable glass jars for everyday items. Instead of buying cereal in boxes, which come with excess plastic, buy cereal in bags. Then, keep them fresh with resealable, reusable bins. Glass spice containers can also be refilled. Best of all, these household items come cheaper without the excess! Do what you can to cut down on your own garbage and you’ll not only replenish the earth but also your wallet!
